Savute

SAVUTE SAFARI

Overview

Savute (also pronounced Savuti), is based in the southern region of the Chobe National Park.  It is worth noting as its own destination as it offers a fantastic wildlife experience, famous for its rivalry between the large lion prides and hyena clans that dominate the area.  Savute links very well with other Botswana destinations, particularly the Okavango Delta or Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe River front.  All of these areas are rich in wildlife and offer diversity in landscape and experiences.  This can be considered a year round destination with excellent game viewing peaking during the winer dry season from the end of April through to October.  The open woodland landscape provide some refuge for large herds of buffalo and other plains game, whilst predators await their daily visit to the waterholes, some of which are permanent all year round.  The area called the Savute Marsh sits on tectonic plates thought still to be shifting as normally dry, it suddenly fills with water after decades of no water.  The Savute has a range of Luxury safari options as well as affordable tented camps.

Time to travel

The best time to view the Savute’s renowned wildlife is during the winter dry season from May to August.  September and October produces phenomenal game viewing but temperatures will be at their highest for the year.  Wildlife is good all year round with Savute having a number of permanent water holes. Mid November through to March is the wet season with the most rain falling during December, January and February.

Wildlife in Savute

Well known for its large lion prides and hyena clans, the Savute is an incredibly wild place.  There is a healthy population of plains game here, particularly large herds of buffalo which run the daily gauntlet as they come to drink at the waterholes.   One may also experience cheetah and packs of wild dogs hunting in the open areas of the park.  Savute is also a bird lovers dream come true, especially during the rainy season with over 450 species of birds recorded in the park.

Activities

Game drives are the most common activity in the Savute.  As the Savute is situated in the Chobe National Park, guided walks are not allowed.   Some of the safari camps and lodges offer their guests a visit to the Gubatsa Hills to view ancient “San rock” paintings which is a small rocky outcrop which forms a striking feature on an otherwise flat landscape.  Our experienced team at Sensational Africa can help you incorporate an amazing Savute safari into your itinerary.
