Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is situated in the East of Rwanda and it is the traditional safari destination in Rwanda.  Thanks to the oversight of African Parks and some local operators poaching has been all but eliminated over the last 7 years and wildlife is thriving in this incredible park.  The park shows great diversity and has  some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa as well as Lake Rwanyakazinga.  Access to the park is either by helicopter or a 3 hour road transfer from Kigali.

Sensational Africa maintains its ethos by offering exclusive safari opportunities in Akagera through our partner Wilderness Safaris who own and manage the exceptional Magashi Camp in an exclusive area on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga.  We tie this in with our Gorilla Trekking experience at the exquisite Bisate Camp at Volcanoes National Park.  One could not ask for more from an East African safari, and for those safari connoisseurs who have a passion for Africa, this is something that should definitely be on your bucketlist.

TIME OF YEAR TO TRAVEL

As with the rest of Rwanda Akagera has 2 dry season and 2 wet seasons. The dry season is from mid-May to mid-October. Between May and October is the longest dry season of the year making trekking a lot more comfortable. There is another shorter dry season between December to February which combines well with a green season safari in Southern Africa. Rwanda's high elevation means a temperate tropical highland climate. The elevation gives you lower temperatures than one would expect of an equatorial country. Even though there is wet seasons we recommend always doing both Bistae and Magashi on the same itinerary.

WILDLIFE

The park boasts a wide selection of wildlife including leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, spotted hyena and a wide range of antelope and smaller creatures.  The birdlife is phenomenal and the park has over 520 species of bird, a staggering number in a relatively smaller park.  The park also has the famous Shoebill, a prehistoric looking bird that lives on the waters edge.
