LAKE KARIBA & MATUSADONA NATIONAL PARK SAFARI HOLIDAYS

LAKE KARIBA

Lake Kariba is situated along the Zimbabwe and Zambia border and at a total volume of 185 cubic kilometres is one of the biggest man-made lakes on Earth.

Lake Kariba is a serene wildlife haven with abundant populations of crocodiles and hippos in its waters. Over 40 species of fish are resident in the lake under the watchful eyes of predatory birds like cormorants and fish eagles. Sports fishing is a great activity in this region with boat safaris also popular for viewing the game. Lake Kariba also supports prolific numbers of birdlife with many species visiting the lake from the neighbouring Matusadona National Park. If relaxing while watching spectacular sunsets is your thing, then visiting Lake Kariba is an opportunity not to be missed.

The Zambezi River was dammed at Kariba Gorge to enable the generation of hydroelectricity that created Lake Kariba. In 1958 the dam wall construction was completed and was slowly filled until 1963 when the lake was full. Today it is a celebrated recreational park enjoyed by thousands of visitors.

MATUSADONA NATIONAL PARK

The name Matusadona comes from the word ‘Matuzviadonha’ or ‘falling dung’, which is a funny but real reference to the seeing elephant dung rolling down hills in the park. Consisting of both majestic mountains and sprawling plains, this extremely scenic region boasts immense populations of lion, elephant, and buffalo. It is also been established as a black rhino sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy rhino tracking and both walking and vehicle safaris, including excursions to the resident crocodile farm.
